Basic Communication Skills >> An Overview of Communication Process
« Unit 2 Learning Unit 2: The Communication Process Unit 3 »
Now we carefully see the communication process- a process we generally believe we know.

The Theory

Many useful models or analogies have been offered to shed light on the mechanics of communication. Now these may appear to be oversimplifying- even trivialisting – an extremely complex area; yet such models can prompt us to take a fresh look at a familiar activity. One of the most widely-employed models of the communication process, which draws on the conventions of radio transmission, was produced in the 1940’s by a mathematician, Claud E Shannon.

In this model the information source is the origin of the flow of information, generating data which is translated into the form of a message which is sent through the transmitter. The channel is the medium of communication chosen. This could, for instance, be sound or visual. The message in unscrambled by a receiver, and decoded to provide a meaning which is registered at its destination.

Activity

  • Do you find this communication model true to ways we communicate?
  • What takes place in you when you want to give some information to some one?
