Recognizing of many elements at play in the simples of information exchanges helps to make interactions more productive- and to analyse what might have gone wrong when communication fails. It should go without saying that honest- frequently painful- self appraisal is vital here.

Here is a simplified sequence for the communicator:

• Define the objectives
• Visualise the recipients: what do you know about them?
• Consider the time and place
• Use terms familiar to the receiver
• Watch overtones as well as the content of the message
• Be as brief ad possible
• If possible, convey something of value or interest to the receiver
• Select the appropriate channel
• Transmit in time to allow any required action to take place
• Secure understanding if your meaning and get the required response

The basic communication skills can be identified as follows:

• For the sender: speaking, writing, acting drawing
• For the receiver: listening, reading, observing
