« Previous Learning Unit 1 : Advantages of Face-to-Face Communication Next »

Oral Communication has several advantages over the written words. Most important is it its immediacy. Face-to-Face communication in particular offers for more than a simple exchange of verbal information: important additional clues are provided through forms of non-verbal communication such as facial expressions, gestures, and other forms of body language. It is usually more informal and natural.

If the listener’s response is negative. - whether this is expressed in words or by a look of boredom or incomprehension- then the speaker can immediately amplify. The information given or correct any misunderstanding. Similarly, the speaker may unconsciously reveal an attitude towards his/her own message, which alters the impact of the words employed. In this case, face-to-face communication offers the opportunity to obtain clarification of feelings as well as information.

Speaking with people is the most direct form of communication, but there are many ways of doing this for example:

• Informal face-to-face conversations with individuals
• Informal face-to-face talks with small groups
• One-to-one interviewing panel
• A formal and informal group meeting
• A presentation to a conference
• A telephone conversation

For instance, if a delicate matter needs discussing it may be better to do in on a one-to-one basis, rather than on a telephone, so that you can judge the reaction. In another situation you may not wish to reveal too much with your facial expressions and may thus prefer to use the phone.

These considerations should govern your choice of medium:

• Which situation would enable the most effective communication
• Which situation would provide me with the feedback and information I require?

Activity:

List the advantages of talking with people rather than writing to them.
