Managers
spend on average two thirds
of their time with other people,
using the skills of speaking
and listening.
We have
already seen that the ultimate
test of communication is the
accurate receipt of the message
in the spirit intended. It
follows that that importance
of listening cannot be overstated.
Unless someone listens to
a message and understands
it, there is no communication-
only noise.
Listening
is an active rather than a
passive process. It takes
energy to concentrate on hearing
what is said, to concentrate
on understanding what has
been heard, and to make an
objective evaluation of what
had been understood.
In some situations,
objective listening is particularly
vital.
For example:
• When either party
is angry or under stress
• When you are intending
to base a decision on the
information received
• When you believe in
advance that you are going
to disagree.
