Types of Poor Listener

There are several types of poor listeners in the workers environment. As you read the descriptions below, decide if you – or anyone you know – fit into these categories.

The Taker

Pseudo listener. Displays head nods, and adds comments like ‘How interesting’ and ‘I see’.

The Continual Talker

Never runs out of things to say. Continually interrupts conversations. Love to hear he/she talks.

The Critic

Very unsupportive, critical of the subject area. Misses the speaker’s underlying feelings. Too busy looking for facts.

The ‘I’m in a hurry’ listener

Never slows down long enough to look you in the eyes and find conversation. Talks and listens while doing other jobs.

The ‘Hand on Doorknob’ Listener

Ordinarily this person keeps his/her office door shut. Body language stresses that he/she wants to get on with other matters.

The ‘Make Sure it is Correct’ Listener

Can be found in every office. In meetings and conversations this person is usually waiting to jump in and point out mistakes- usually interrupting conversations and making the speaker feel bad.

The ‘I’ll Finish the Sentence Off’ Listener

Impatient, always in a hurry, eager to finish off the conversation for you. Usually jumps in with remarks like ‘I know what you’re saying here’.
