Successful Interviewing >> Important Role of Interviewer

Introduction

Seldom interviewer realizes that his job is most demanding and complex of all jobs. Demanding because he should have thorough knowledge of job requirements in relation to his organisation; some knowledge of psychology; knowledge of hiring or recruitment procedures of his organisation; and some idea about the state laws on the subject. His job is complex due to the fact he has to make right choice of candidate with the help of inadequate information (CV and supporting documents does not provide you all information about the applicant) and artificial situation i.e. interview (artificial because candidate tries all the time to project his better image concealing shortcomings, limitations and failures). And yet his decision is of vital importance to his organisation having long range impact. Finally it is a test of his hiring skills. This course module is aimed at guiding personnel executives and line managers in improving their effectiveness as an interviewer.

Finding the Right Chap

Effectiveness of interviewer will help him in ‘finding the right sort of chap’ .After all finding the right sort of chap is not easy, for these are a great many wrong sorts of chaps. Right sorts of chap can relied upon to carry out tasks with less or even without supervision. He can stand on his own feet and get the job done. The ‘right sort of chap’ is the right chap in the right job. Selection of wrong chap could be disastrous for the individual as well as for

the organisation. Working with wrong chap could be frustrating experience. Such subordinate cannot be relied up on to carry out even the simple tasks without supervision. Wrong chaps get bored with monotonous, repetitive tasks which fail to give them enough scope or present enough challenge. Such types find many different ways of making a nuisance of themselves having new ideas about bringing forward suggestions, and generally making life unbearable for their superiors. Such workers cannot stand up to the demands of a responsible job and they fold up under pressure. They cannot stand the pace. The results can be disastrous for themselves and the organisation.

Right sorts and wrong sorts don’t just depend on the chaps themselves. The kind of job they are employed to do plays a larger part in determining what sort they are. Finding the right sort of chap is really putting the selection problem in a nutshell. This module, it is hoped, will equip interviewers with desired skills and knowledge in finding the right chap for the right job.
