Learning Unit 3 : Reaching Agreement

Summarising

  • Suggest “I think it would be helpful if we could summarise what all we have discussed and reached this agreements”.
  • “Better that we note it down so that no point is later missed by anyone”.

It is a good strategy to use written summaries at the end of the discussion. This would not allow later on this disagreement about what has or has not been discussed and agreed.

Reaching Agreement

  • After a long and difficult discussion ‘final’ should be taken as ‘final’. No further concessions or compromise should be allowed.
  • Be tactful and persuasive so that to ensure the final outcome, which is of advantage of you, is seen by the other person of benefit to his party.
  • The key strategy in any negotiation is “Be Persuasive”.
  • Emphasise the other party’s benefits.
  • Appreciate the other party’s cooperation and brilliant suggestions.
